Historic Beaufort Inn Reopens After Extensive Renovation

In a remarkable blend of history and modernity, the Cuthbert House, a historic inn located in Beaufort, South Carolina, has proudly reopened its doors. The inn, which dates back to the Civil War era, has undergone an extensive renovation to it both preserve and upgrade its facilities while maintaining its rich historical ties.

A Rich History

The Cuthbert House, a waterfront inn situated on Beaufort River, was originally constructed back in 1790, making it one of the oldest surviving 18th-century mansions in the area. Initially serving as a home to the Cuthbert family, the house later became a hub for community leaders and influential politicians, before being occupied by the Union Army during the American Civil War. By the 1880s, the house had expanded into a grand Victorian-style home featuring large bay windows, detailed trim, and vast porches on both sides of the central portico. In 1972, the mansion was added to the National Register of Historic Places, saving it from demolition and affirming its status as a cherished local landmark.

Modern Features with a Historical Touch

Today, the inn hosts 10 unique guest quarters, grouped into three categories: Federal, Victorian, and Lowcountry. Each room showcases the craftsmanship of its era, appointed with a fine mix of antique furniture and modern amenities. The color palette used throughout the inn is inspired by the surrounding natural landscape and waterfront, while various antique pieces add a touch of historic refinement.

The renovation process also introduced some significant changes, such as refreshed interiors, the restoration of original hardwood floors and exposed brick fireplaces, and upgraded spacious bathrooms with classic finishes. In terms of modern amenities, visitors can now enjoy flat-screen televisions, streaming services, and smartphone charging ports in their rooms.

Preserving Local Ties

In line with the inn’s commitment to enhancing local ties, a range of local and regional purveyors were selected in the renovation process. Some of the local elements incorporated into the newly remodeled inn include premium pillows from Harris Pillow Supply, located in Beaufort, bedding from Southern Lady, luxury robes by Chadsworth & Haig, fine bed linen by Standard Textile and custom scented candles from Lowcountry Candle Company.
