New Community-Friendly Store, Goodfortune Market, Coming Soon to Waters Avenue, Savannah

Residents of Savannah can look forward to a brand-new community-friendly store in the heart of the city. Located at 2413 Waters Avenue, Goodfortune Market is set to specialize in made-to-order coffee, bagels, and local grocery staples. With an intentional focus on fresh and quality foods, it additionally promises a selection of prepared foods and various household items.

The Inspiration Behind Goodfortune Market

Local resident, Becca Goossen, conceived the idea for Goodfortune Market. Her inspiration stemmed from the need for a fresh, quality food resource in her own neighborhood. Whilst navigating her surroundings during the winter of 2022 and early 2023, she stumbled upon a building under construction that seemed perfect for the establishment of her vision.

“The market is within walking distance of the Ardsley Park, Baldwin Park, and Live Oak neighborhoods,” said Goossen. “There is no appropriate food resource that’s easily accessible, and I knew this was the spot to fill that gap.”

Building Goodfortune Market

The creation of this community-friendly store has been several years in the making, with Goossen formally starting her business plan in 2021. Her experience in the food industry and retail product purchasing helped her prepare the groundwork for Goodfortune Market.

The market’s potential was further recognized in November 2023 when it won SCORE Savannah’s local entrepreneurial contest, BizPitch. During her presentation, Goossen expressed her belief in the benefits of small markets, stating, “Small markets are good for our bodies, good for our community, and good for our economy. What I really want people to know is that Goodfortune is good for everyone.”

Location and Operation Hours

Goodfortune Market is strategically nestled between two other women-owned businesses—Cast & Grey Botanical and The Stacks Bookstore. The market aims to operate seven days a week from 7 am to 7 pm, hoping customers who visit their New York-style bodega will become repeat customers.

Keeping in theme with the grab-and-go model of convenience, Goossen stated, “We want to be, first and foremost, an appropriate food resource for fresh and quality food. But ultimately, we want to be a community-friendly food store for convenient daily shopping.”

A Community Collaboration

In a broader sense, Goodfortune Market plans to extend its collaborations with the community. Goossen also sits on the Savannah-Chatham Food Policy Council—a group with a mission to provide equitable access to the food supply system, as part of Healthy Savannah initiative.

“Within a food supply chain, we are the market part of that and there are a lot of other collaborators in the community, from neighborhood people to farmers to master gardeners that are all collaborating together,” Goossen explained.

Looking to the Future

With Goodfortune Market coming soon to Waters Avenue, residents in and around Savannah will soon have a new resource offering fresh, quality foods right in their neighborhood. Much more than just a store, Goodfortune Market aims to be a hub for community collaboration and convenient shopping, contributing to an integral part of everyday life.
