Bluffton Welcomes First Foodseum in the South

Bluffton, SC—The Technical College of the Lowcountry’s Culinary Institute of the South celebrated the grand opening of the Foodseum on March 7, marking the establishment of the first interactive museum of its kind in the South.

About the Foodseum

Located on the first floor of the Culinary Institute campus, the Foodseum aims to celebrate Southern food and Lowcountry cuisine while attracting both locals and tourists to explore the region’s rich food heritage.

  • Exhibits and Themes: Interactive displays highlighting Lowcountry agriculture, artifacts like kitchen utensils, and archived recipes.
  • Featured Topics: Revolving themes will include Gullah, Geechee, Seafood, and Farm to Table.
  • Space: The Foodseum covers over 1,000 square feet.
  • Hours: Open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays.
  • Admission: Free; donations accepted.

Educational Offerings

The Foodseum will host guest lecturers, hands-on seminars, and additional educational programming, further enriching the culinary experience at the institute.

Location and Vision

Strategically situated between Savannah, GA, and Charleston, SC, the Foodseum seeks to draw visitors to the Culinary Institute, which itself offers programs in Baking & Pastry, Culinary, and Hospitality, enabling students to earn associate degrees or certificates.

Culinary Institute Details

Opened in November 2021, the Culinary Institute of the South spans 30,000 square feet and includes:

  • Six academic classrooms
  • Two teaching kitchens and a show kitchen
  • A baking lab and lecture theater
  • A teaching restaurant and café

Community Impact

Serving approximately 5,000 students annually across its campuses in Beaufort, Bluffton, and Hampton, the Technical College of the Lowcountry laid the groundwork for the Culinary Institute at a cost of about $15.3 million.

Initial classes at the Culinary Institute are set to begin in January 2022.
