Hilton Head Beach Celebrates Athletic Triumphs

In a dazzling show of sportsmanship, Hilton Head Prep has once again proven its dominance in boys’ basketball, winning its third consecutive title at the SC Independent Schools Association (SCISA) Championships with an impressive 45-19 victory over Pee Dee Academy. The thrilling match took place at Sumter Civic Center on February 22. Not only was this victory pivotal for the team, but it also capped off a remarkable season where the Dolphins secured a record of 25-4.

A Season to Remember

Under the expert guidance of Coach Richard Barron, Hilton Head Prep has now clinched all three of its state championship victories, showcasing his exceptional leadership. The highlight of the championship game could be attributed to senior player Ty Harpring, who took the lead in scoring with 14 points. Harpring’s stellar performance throughout the playoffs, including an incredible 36 points during the semifinal against Orangeburg Prep, saw him average a whopping 21.3 points game during this intense stretch.

The Dolphins’ defense played a crucial role in their success, conceding merely 45 points across their three championship games. This defensive prowess was palpable during the state title game, particularly in the second quarter where they significantly outscored Pee Dee Academy 13-2, establishing a solid 23-11 lead by halftime. Other notable contributors included Billy Barron, who scored 8 points, and Jake Sheahan, who added another 7 points to the scoreboard.

Cross Schools Make Waves

On the girls’ side of things, the atmosphere was just as electric as Cross Schools secured their second straight championship title by overcoming Laurens Academy with a score of 45-29, clinching the 2A girls’ championship. This year, they moved up in classification after having danced their way to the Class A title last season. The Stingrays proved they could compete on a higher level, dazzling fans with their tenacity and skill.

Junior standout Ryan Mayers was a force to be reckoned with, scoring 17 points and showcasing his prowess with a crucial 11 points coming in the second half. Fellow teammate Caroline Wheat was also key to the victory with 11 points, bolstered by sinking three three-pointers. After trailing 11-7 at the end of the first quarter, Cross Schools turned it around at halftime, leading 20-15. The Stingrays’ defense was a showstopper, stifling Laurens to just three field goals in the entirety of the second half.

All-Tournament Honors

Recognition of talent didn’t stop there! The SCISA AAA boys’ all-tournament team included Harpring, Billy Barron, and Brendan Moore from Hilton Head Prep, along with key players from Pee Dee Academy, Causey and Richardson. This acknowledgment crowns their hard work and highlights the competitive spirit shared among the athletes.

A Heartfelt Commendation

Although Pee Dee Academy faced setbacks, Coach Drew acknowledged the commitment and dedication shown by his seniors throughout the season. Even with the loss, the spirit of sportsmanship shone brightly as both teams displayed incredible talent and resilience.

The thrilling match concluded with both teams fiercely guarding their baskets during the final quarter, where Hilton Head Prep edged Pee Dee Academy 8 to 6. Together, these championship victories have undoubtedly added to the rich legacy of Hilton Head Prep and Cross Schools, securing a place in the heart of the community and showcasing the incredible talent present in the Lowcountry.
