Savannah Celebrates a Century of Brotherhood: The Wolves Club Marks 100 Years!

The historic Wolves Club is rolling out the red carpet for its 100th anniversary on December 31, 2024, with a black-tie formal dance at the Savannah Civic Center Ballroom. It’s an invitation-only affair, so if you’re one of the lucky guests, prepare for a night of nostalgia, celebration, and a deep dive into the club’s rich history.
A Look Back to 1924
It all began on a crisp autumn day in 1924 when a vibrant group of young men gathered at Young’s Café, located at 507 West Broad Street near Gaston Street. This was no ordinary meet-up; it was the spark that ignited a passion for camaraderie and community among its members. During that first meeting, they agreed to establish a permanent organization, laying the groundwork for what would become a century of brotherhood.
At the foot of their journey, *founding members* like John Carr, William Jones Jr., and Nathaniel Branham formed a committee to name their brand-new club. After careful consideration, they decided on the name The Wolves, along with club colors of gray and green, setting a bold precedent for identity and tradition.
From Humble Beginnings to Grand Dances
The Wolves Club’s mission was straightforward yet profound: to establish a higher social standing within the community. Their first formal dance held at the Savannah Boys Club marked the start of annual celebrations, lovingly sponsored by the club, and this tradition continues today, culminating in the momentous 100th anniversary celebration.
Current Leadership and Membership
Fast forward to the present, the Wolves Club is alive and kicking! The current officers are a group of committed individuals who embody the spirit of the club. Meet the team: Harold Singleton takes the helm as Leader; Alfred Mullice serves as Scout; and Christopher K. Middleton is on point as Scratcher. Rounding out the team are Michael Kaigler, Keeper of Sustenance; Charles J. Elmore, Sr., Chairman of the Board of Guardians; Horace Magwood, III, Chief Forager; and Charles Gilyard, our Chaplain.
The pack of members is just as diverse and vibrant, including standout individuals like Clevon Johnson, William Lyght, Reginald Martin, and Henry Lee Perry. The legacy continues, with honorary members like Otis J. Brock and Edward Vaughn, reminding us of the rich history that each member brings to the table.
