Beaufort Buzz: Exciting Happenings and Honoring Local Heroes!
Hey there, Beaufort! It’s been quite the month in our charming little corner of South Carolina, and we can’t wait to share the latest news that has been making waves in our community. Grab a cup of coffee or tea, sit back, and let’s dive in!
Swim Into History at the Charles Lind Brown Center
First up, let’s talk about the Charles Lind Brown Center! Many of us have fond memories of splashing around in the pool there, right? Well, it just got a special makeover—because the swimming pool has now been officially named after one of our very own heroes! That’s right, folks, the pool is now dubbed the Alvin Settles Pool in honor of Alvin Settles, who dedicated over 30 years of his life to teaching swimming lessons there. Talk about making a splash in the community! His contributions have undoubtedly left a lasting legacy, ensuring that countless kids learned how to swim safely. Let’s give a big cheer for his hard work!
A Toast to Local Veterans
Moving on to more local awesomeness, we have to give a huge shout-out to Lt. Col. Larry Dandridge, who recently received the Order of the Palmetto. This prestigious award is the highest civilian honor in South Carolina, and Dandridge has been a regular contributor to our community with his insights and experiences. It’s incredible to see someone who’s given so much to our country and community being recognized like this. Bravo, Lt. Col. Dandridge!
Preserving Our Historic Charm
Now, you might have heard about the Beaufort City Council making strides to keep our rich history alive. They recently approved an updated version of the Beaufort Preservation Manual, otherwise known to many as the Milner Report. This essential document provides guidelines for preserving our historic structures, which is fantastic news for everyone who loves our town’s unique architecture. It’s great to know that we’re taking steps to keep Beaufort as beautiful and inviting as ever!
Pride Events Shine Bright
And let’s not forget about diversity and inclusion! The annual Lowcountry Pride Festival made a fabulous debut in Port Royal this year! It was a fantastic and colorful event that brought together folks from all walks of life. Nothing says community like celebrating love and acceptance. Here’s to more vibrant events where everyone can be their true selves!
Mixed Martial Arts Takes Center Stage
And for all the fight fans out there, you’ll want to hear this! The inaugural Beaufort Brawl, a mixed martial arts event, recently took place at The Foundry. It was an electrifying night filled with action, excitement, and plenty of local talent showing what they’ve got. This new addition to our community events calendar is sure to grow, and we can’t wait to see more of it in the future!
Throwback to Historic Moments
As we reflect on our past, did you know that on November 7 back in 1861, Union warships attacked Fort Walker? And let’s not forget about Beaufort’s own Robert Smalls being elected to the South Carolina Legislature on November 3, 1874. Our history is rich and full of tales that inspire us even today!
There you have it, Beaufort! Whether it’s honoring local heroes, preserving our history, or bringing everyone together in celebration, there’s plenty to be excited about in our vibrant community. Remember to support each other and keep the spirit of Beaufort alive and well! Until next time!
