This Saturday, November 16, Savannah is buzzing with energy as it hosts the highly anticipated Every Woman’s Marathon. After much anticipation since its announcement earlier this year, this event promises to be a memorable experience for both runners and spectators. The marathon features a challenging 26.2-mile course that winds through 15 distinct neighborhoods, beginning in West Savannah and culminating at Savannah State University.
Runners Ready to Hit the Streets!
With approximately 7,200 runners registered to participate, there’s no shortage of excitement! Just imagine all those feet pounding the pavement as they make their way through our beautiful city! According to Joseph Marinelli, the President and CEO of Visit Savannah, this is not just a race; it’s a celebration of community, health, and empowerment.
Public Safety Comes First
Safety is a top priority, and to ensure everything runs smoothly, the Savannah Police Department has assigned over 180 officers to help manage the event. Officers will be stationed throughout the city, ready to assist residents and keep traffic flowing as smoothly as possible. Susan Broker, the city’s director for the Office of Special Events, Film and Tourism, mentioned that while efforts have been made to minimize disruptions, some inconveniences are to be expected due to the scale of the marathon.
What Residents Should Know
City leaders are kindly urging residents to practice a little patience ahead of the marathon. It’s a big event, and there’s bound to be some disruption. The race has been allocated a generous time limit of seven hours and 45 minutes, meaning the last runners are expected to cross the finish line by 3 p.m. If you’re planning to navigate Savannah on that day, it’s vital to stay informed about road closures and alternative routes.
Race Day Logistics
So, here’s the scoop on the marathon’s route. The race kicks off at 6:57 a.m. right on Bay Street at Savannah City Hall. From there, runners will tackle their first four miles through West Savannah, taking in sights as they make their way through the historic streets. As they journey through downtown, they’ll pass numerous parks and squares, including the beautiful Forsyth Park, which adds to the scenic charm of this event.
As the marathon winds its way to Savannah State University, participants will pass by stunning landmarks, including the featured Trustee’s Garden, where the finish festival will take place, a slight change from previous years held in Forsyth Park. The runners will enjoy a cozy finish after seeing the various beautiful sights Savannah has to offer.
Road Closures and Alternative Routes
Now let’s talk about road closures. It’s important to note that the start area between Bay Street and Abercorn Street will be closed to traffic starting at 3 a.m. on Saturday. If you park there, be prepared for your vehicle to be towed — that’s the only area where towing will occur. Bay Street is slated to reopen by 9:30 a.m. Other traffic restrictions include the northbound lanes of Truman Parkway starting at 5 a.m., with roads expected to reopen by 3 p.m..
