Ridgeland Veterans Celebrate Emotional Reunion at OPFOB Gala

Ridgeland Veterans Unite in Emotional Reunion at OPFOB Gala

This past November 9, an evening filled with emotion and inspiration unfolded at the annual gala of the Operation Patriots Forward Base (OPFOB) on beautiful Hilton Head Island. The occasion was not just about celebrating the bravery of veterans, but also about an unforgettable surprise that reunited two soldiers from opposite sides of a battle long ago.

OPFOB: A Beacon of Hope for Veterans

For those unfamiliar, OPFOB is a remarkable 268-acre facility dedicated to supporting veterans and first responders. The organization aims to preserve lives and tackle the tragic issue of veteran suicide in the United States. By fostering a strong community through outdoor and recreational activities, OPFOB creates a space where veterans can connect, share experiences, and build a support network.

An Unforgettable Award Presentation

The heartwarming highlight of the evening came when Craig Ostergard was awarded the prestigious Sgt. Baez Honor Courage Commitment Award. To Craig’s utter surprise, the award was presented to him by none other than his Vietnamese counterpart from the Vietnam War, Ri Nay. This touching moment captured the true spirit of brotherhood formed during their service overseas.

Ostergard, who has called Hilton Head home for over 40 years, expressed his gratitude, stating, “I am honored to receive this award, but I don’t do this for accolades. I just wanted to make a difference in the lives of men and women who served our country so proudly and come home with no purpose, and no one to connect with like they do on the battlefield.”

From War to Community

With a decorated background as an Army Infantry Officer in Vietnam, Craig is no stranger to the struggles faced by veterans. He recalls his own difficult transition back to civilian life, sharing how he was often met with hostility and misunderstanding when he returned home. Despite these challenges, he persevered and built a successful career in real estate while contributing to his Hilton Head community.

Ri Nay, who previously served as a Company Commander with American Special Forces, reminisced about the friendship they built during the war. Despite facing language barriers, their bond grew strong as they worked tirelessly to provide medical aid to the Montagnard people, the indigenous community of Vietnam. Unfortunately, after Craig’s transfer, the two lost contact, with Nay being one of the last to leave Saigon when it fell in 1975.

A Mission of Honor

Through OPFOB’s initiative, Nay and his wife, Charlene, managed to surprise Craig for the first time since reconnecting in recent years. “Our platoon was a brotherhood, fighting together, living together and surviving together every day,” Nay said, expressing his desire to honor Craig for the impact he has made on veterans’ lives in the community.

“Once you serve with someone in battle, you are brothers for life,” said JR Brown, the founder of OPFOB. “Sometimes life gets in the way of reconnecting. We made sure that these two heroes’ lives intersect once again.” It’s heartening to see organizations like OPFOB go above and beyond to create such meaningful experiences for veterans and their families.

A Tribute to a Fallen Friend

The Sgt. Baez Honor Courage Commitment Award was established last year in memory of Carlos Baez, a dear friend of JR Brown’s, who valiantly fought cancer after spending 15 years in conflict zones. “Carlos meant the world to me, so to be able to honor somebody with his name means that this person means just as much to me, OPFOB, and our mission,” Brown shared with deep emotion.

A Community that Cares

It’s inspiring to see how such events not only honor the past but also serve as a reminder of the community’s commitment to supporting its heroes. In a world where many face the silent battles of mental health, programs like OPFOB shine a light, offering a path to healing through companionship and understanding.

The gala not only celebrated the spirit of veterans but also highlighted the incredible journey of friendship and the importance of looking out for one another. In Ridgeland and beyond, the stories of camaraderie continue to remind us all of the power found in unity.
