Beaufort is home to a remarkable individual who embodies vitality and determination despite her age. Meet Renee Levin, a vibrant 95-year-old powerhouse who has made it her mission to lead an active and fulfilling life. On the surface, she may seem like just another adorable grandmother, but delve a little deeper, and you’ll find a woman who radiates discipline and drive.
Renee’s living room boasts large waterfront windows that allow the early fall sunlight to flood in, illuminating her collection of serene artwork. However, the centerpiece of this serene environment is anything but peaceful – it’s a bright red exercise ball, and perched atop it is none other than Renee herself. Dressed comfortably and showcasing her strength, she engages her core while staying fit and active.
Even Hurricane Helene couldn’t deter Renee from taking care of her yard. Despite the storm’s aftermath littering her yard with pinecones, she’s opted for a practical approach to cleanup. “I’m scaling back,” she confessed. “Only filling two wheelbarrows a day.” It’s a testament to her ability to prioritize her activities while still getting things done.
Renee has a workout routine that proves age is just a number. She commits to visiting the LifeFit Wellness Center multiple times a week to keep active. “I try to go three days a week,” she said with a smile. “I think it’s the name of the game.” For Renee, staying healthy is a priority, as she showcases her tenacity by engaging in an hour-long workout that utilizes all the machines and stretches that LifeFit has to offer.
Renee wasn’t just a member of LifeFit; she was one of the very first members of a newly established osteoporosis prevention exercise group when the facility opened its doors back in 2002. Renee and her friends were trailblazers in promoting health and fitness for the community. “It certainly has grown, which is wonderful,” she remarked, reflecting on LifeFit’s incredible expansion over the years.
Art is also a significant part of Renee’s life, as evidenced by the beautiful pieces displayed around her home. Her creative spirit shines through not just in her artwork but also in how she describes nature. “Live oaks aren’t straight up and down,” she beautifully noted, mimicking the graceful stretch of the branches. “They’re like a beautiful lady dancing.” It’s this combination of physical activity and creative expression that keeps her mind sharp.
Renee firmly believes in the importance of movement. “If you sit on the couch and don’t move, you become a blob,” she said, showing her practical yet straightforward mindset. “If you don’t get up and exercise, you lose everything. Things become negative rather than positive.” With this mindset driving her, she plans to keep her active lifestyle at LifeFit as long as she can. “I really think it’s the name of the game,” she reiterated, still bouncing lightly on her exercise ball.
In the spirit of community support, the LifeFit Wellness Center has been selected as the recipient of this year’s Giving Tuesday campaign by the Beaufort Memorial Foundation. The Foundation hopes to raise $35,000 to purchase new fitness equipment to enhance the wellness offerings for patrons. Kim Yawn, the Chief Development Officer of the Foundation, expressed enthusiasm: “LifeFit is proof that we are serving that mission.”
If you want to help the foundation reach its goal, consider donating on Giving Tuesday, December 3, at the Beaufort Memorial website. Join in supporting a cause that helps community members like Renee continue to live active, fulfilling lives.
