11 Students from Beaufort and Jasper Counties Awarded Heritage Classic Foundation Scholarships

11 Students from Beaufort and Jasper Counties Awarded Heritage Classic Foundation Scholarships

In an inspiring affirmation of students’ hardwork and dedication, the Heritage Classic Foundation has granted scholarships to 11 high school students from five different schools in Beaufort and Jasper counties. These students, selected based on academic success, community service, financial need and praiseworthy essays composed by themselves, demonstrate a promising future ahead.

Scholarship Awardees and Amounts

Six students have been awarded $16,000 in scholarships which will be distributed over a span of four years. The fortunate recipients include Zoe Way from Battery Creek High School, Aiden Harvey from Bluffton High School, Noah Henry and Annabelle Nelson from Beaufort High School, and Hilton Head Island High School seniors Jhasly Berra and Evelyn Prokes.

Four students from this year’s cohort bagged $20,000 scholarships. Interestingly, three of these scholarships bear the names of former Scholar Committee members and chairmen, shedding a light on their important contributions towards promoting education. The fourth one, the Tartan Club Award, honors a noteworthy donation made to the foundation by the Tartan Club.

Nathan Tran, a senior student at Beaufort High School, won the John Zimmerman Award, named after Zimmerman who served as the chairman of the Scholar Committee. Hilton Head Island High School’s senior, Susana Mogil received the Mike Malanick Award named after the late Scholar Committee chairman. James Guerin Willis, also a senior at Beaufort High School, has been decorated with the Charlie Brown Award, remembering the late Scholar Committee member Charlie Brown. The Tartan Club Award went to Anthony Bynum, a senior at Hilton Head Island High School.

First Jasper County Scholarship Recipient

Lamika Walker, a senior at Ridgeland Secondary Academy of Excellence, made history by becoming the first recipient of the Kirby Scholarship and the first scholar from Jasper County to receive a Heritage Classic Foundation Scholarship. This one-year $4,000 scholarship was initiated in memory of the late Scholar Committee chairman Ward Kirby.

A Day of Celebration

During the award ceremony held on March 11, Scott Richardson, the chairman of the Heritage Classic Foundation Scholar Committee, showered praises on the recipients saying, “This is always an exciting day for the Heritage Classic Foundation. We believe the resumes of these young adults are better than ever. The teachers and administrators of our school systems, as well as the award winners, deserve special praise.”

He added, “You are not just straight-A students. You are leaders in your schools, communities and churches. Your interests vary from volunteerism to sports to caring for the environment.” It was indeed a moment of pride and joy for everyone involved.

Continued Contributions towards Uplifting Education

The Heritage Classic Foundation has a long history of supporting educational and charitable initiatives that positively change lives in South Carolina. Over the past 37 years, they’ve raised and donated a whopping $52.9 million. Not stopping at these 11 scholarships, the foundation plans to fund four more $2,500 annual scholarships to the University of South Carolina- Beaufort and two $1,500 annual scholarships to the Technical College of the Lowcountry.

All students from Beaufort and Jasper counties are welcome to apply for these scholarships. In addition, the foundation has also granted one-time $2,500 grants to the two candidates who, despite being finalists, were not selected among the 11 awardees this time.
